PREVENTION - INTERVENTION - PROSECUTION
The duties of a Commonwealth’s Attorney’s office can be organized into three main areas: prevention, intervention, and prosecution. As Chesapeake’s next Commonwealth’s Attorney, these pillars will guide the actions and priorities of my office.
PREVENTION
The most effective way to protect victims is to foster an environment where victimization is prevented altogether. Achieving this requires a strong commitment to crime prevention. In today’s world, Commonwealth’s Attorneys must be proactive rather than simply reacting to crime after it occurs.
A vital aspect of this role is ongoing community engagement, not only during election seasons, but throughout the entire year. Consistent outreach keeps citizens’ concerns at the forefront and holds the office accountable to those it serves.
As Commonwealth’s Attorney, I will broaden community outreach by reintroducing mentorship programs for youth, collaborating with community groups and violence interrupter programs, and offering educational initiatives to help prevent crime before it starts. During my time as a prosecutor in Chesapeake, I was actively involved in community outreach, and I am committed to restoring the successful programs that have since lapsed.
INTERVENTION
Distinguishing between violent, habitual criminals and individuals making their first, nonviolent mistake is one of the justice system’s most important responsibilities. Whenever possible, first-time nonviolent offenders should be diverted from the traditional system through education, community service, or, for the youngest, even a stern talking-to. Each sentencing decision must be guided by the question: how is justice best served? Sometimes, justice means helping someone find a better path rather than imposing severe penalties.
As Commonwealth’s Attorney, I will strongly advocate for specialized courts, such as mental health and drug courts. These alternatives offer vital support to nonviolent offenders in place of incarceration and help reduce recidivism in our city. Additionally, I believe that experienced prosecutors should be assigned to Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, where many young people are first confronted with mental health or substance abuse challenges. Having knowledgeable prosecutors in these courts can make a significant difference in changing lives.
PROSECUTION
For violent and career criminals, or when intervention is not suitable, full prosecution is essential. Those who commit serious crimes such as murder, rape, robbery, or carjacking must be incarcerated, both for punishment and for the safety of our community. Accountability is paramount, and my office will stand up for victims and confront violent crime head-on in the courtroom. As Commonwealth’s Attorney, my office will be well trained, well mentored, and unafraid to try cases and seek justice.
While I am committed to being tough on crime, that does not mean disregarding the rights of the accused. My office will ensure that every prosecution is thorough, fair, and conducted with integrity. We will follow the law and uphold the highest standards, relentlessly seeking justice for the victims and people of Chesapeake.
